SPAR Eastern Cape launched its war on plastic in April 2018 in an attempt to safeguard the future of the environment.
The retailer took the decision as it felt it would be irresponsible to continue its operations without acknowledging accountability for the number of plastic bags plaguing the world.
The objective is to encourage retailers to swap plastic shopping bags for the more environmentally friendly paper variety and to convince consumers to clean up their neighbourhoods by using these.
The reusable bags are water-resistant and able to carry 12kg of groceries.
The initiative has been welcomed by environmental groups such as the Zwartkops Conservancy, which has been vocal about plastic’s toxic effect on the planet’s natural resources.
